It's been just over a year since North Carolina passed HB2, the so-called "bathroom bill," which forced transgender people to use the bathroom corresponding with the sex listed on their birth certificate rather than the gender they identify with.

But yesterday, North Carolina lawmakers voted to repeal it, following growing pressure from the NCAA and businesses that threatened an ongoing boycott of the state. North Carolina's Democratic Governor Roy Cooper backed the new compromise bill, and is expected to sign it into law.

But it's being condemned by many in the LGBTQ community, who say it doesn't go far enough and still allows for discrimination.

Deb Butler, a Democratic state representative serving North Carolina's 18th District and the state's second openly LGTBQ legislator, joins The Takeaway to discuss the bill and its replacement, and where North Carolina goes from here.
